Arthur C Guyton graduated from Harvard Medical School. He was a bright student who later became a successful medical teacher, researcher, and acclaimed author. Unfortunately, he suffered from polio during his residentship. Both his shoulders, his right leg, and left arm were paralyzed. He refused to succumb to the crippling effects of the disease. He even designed his own leg brace, a hoist to move on from bed, and a motorized wheelchair controlled by an electric joystick. For these inventions, he received a Presidential citation. He always drew inspiration from his father (An ENT specialist) who was the Dean of the medical school in Oxford. His mother taught mathematics and physics. In the middle of his senior year in medical school, he and his future wife Ruth Weigle began a serious courtship which culminated in their marriage on June 12, 1943.
