Daniel John Cunningham

We know Daniel Cunningham (15 April 1850 – 23 July 1909) the anatomist, famous Cunningham’s Manual of Practical Anatomy. The dissection steps and diagrams in his manual are gold standard for Cunningham’s Text-book of Anatomy was first published in 1902, went through 15  cadaveric dissection even today. editions under various editors: the first three editions were prepared under Cunningham’s editorship. 

Following initial education he studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, where he qualified as Bachelor of Medicine and Master of Surgery with first class honours in 1874.  He did his M.D. in 1876, receiving a Gold Medal for his thesis work on the anatomy of the Cetacea. From 1876 until 1882 he worked as a demonstrator at the university. In 1878, he married Elizabeth Cumming Browne. He moved to the chair of Anatomy at Trinity college,Dublin which he held from 1883 to 1903. On the appointment of Sir William Turner to the post of Principal and Vice-Chancellor at the University of Edinburgh he was invited to succeed him as Professor of Anatomy. He held that post from 1903 until his death.  His recreations were angling and cycling. He was very fond of animals. He had three sons and two daughters. Each of his three sons achieved distinction in different fields – one in the Army, another in the Navy and the third in the Indian Medical Service. Ironically, a grandson was born to one of his daughters on the day of his funeral.
