Editorial- Silence is Golden-Conditions Apply…

Imagine a room in a hostel being shared by two friends. There is silence in the room and both are busy. Their nonchalance or casualness indicates that they get along well and are comfortable with each other’s presence. On the other hand imagine a relationship between two individuals on duty together where silence adds pressure and creates misunderstandings. In both scenarios, the pros and cons of silence are evident. The hostel scenario is a case of constructive silence while the duty scenario indicates destructive silence. Indeed silences can be ‘leaden’ and they can be ‘golden’.

Silence is also communication, and is as important as speech. The context of a situation defines the power and message of silence. Constructive silence is progressive-here the individuals are in sync and both are gainers. Destructive silence on the other hand creates barriers and prevents expression of thoughts.

Silence in a situation can indicate respect, empathy and also authority. Silence can also indicate horror, awe, uncertainty or disagreement. Silences create a listening space which deepens our understanding. Silence on a matter in a situation can be interpreted as a ‘yes’ or a ‘no’. Interpretation at times can be subjective and adds to the confusion. Mostly, an individual stays silent on a matter because of indecision-something which can be described as the calm ocean with strong undercurrents.

Dear students, silence is powerful and indicative. It gives time, but one must not linger on with the silence. Staying put with silence can make the silence destructive for all concerned. In that scenario one tends to be walked upon, is liable to be used and misjudged. So, if a silence becomes deafening, come out of the situation by making a decision. Convey the decision, break the silence and accept the change. ‘Indecision’ and prolonged silence do ruin the continuity. This life is a gift and a decision (whether right or wrong) taken timely can propel an individual on a track. Waiting too long on the platform of life can make the ‘waiting room’ our destination…
