62 million tonnes of waste is generated in urban India per year. It is predicted that this figure will increase to 165 million tonnes by 2030 1 .Out of the present waste, only 22-28% is treated 2. About 2 billion tonnes of waste is produced by the entire humankind every year 3. Waste accumulation is the greatest enemy of life on Earth. Most of us have learnt about this waste management crisis in school and are well aware of slogans like “SAY NO TO PLASTIC”or “REFUSE,REDUCE REUSE RECYCLE”. Despite that, we all are guilty of not playing an active role in reducing our use of plastic. We seem to be more interested in theories like inhabiting other planets or dumping all our waste in the space rather than adopting a sustainable lifestyle. This is so because changing our lives for the better will take time and energy and we all are extremely preoccupied by other stresses like our studies, achieving goals and providing for our families.
